THINGS TO DO NEAR SHELTER ISLAND
Locals' shortlist for a day or night around Shelter Island.
Shelter Island is one of San Diego's prettiest waterfront stretches — a curved spit of land in Point Loma lined with marinas, fishing charters, hotels, and a long waterfront park. Here's what locals actually do around it on a half-day, a date night, or a long Saturday. (Spoiler: we usually end up at Harbor Town Pub.)
Daytime
- Walk the Shelter Island waterfront park — flat, dog-friendly, bay views the whole way.
- Charter a fishing trip from Fisherman's Landing — half-day, full-day, overnight. Tuna, yellowtail, the works.
- Rent a kayak or SUP — calm marina water, easy paddle.
- Cabrillo National Monument — fifteen minutes south, lighthouse + tidepools + view of all of San Diego Bay.
- Sunset Cliffs — slightly further south on the ocean side, best at golden hour.
Eat & drink
Hotel bars on Shelter Island itself are good for one drink with a view. For a full meal, locals drive five minutes back to Rosecrans:
- Harbor Town Pub — neighborhood pub, dog-friendly patio, full menu, sports on. The local default.
- Bali Hai — tiki classic on the island for sunset mai tais.
- Humphreys Backstage Live — live music nights only.

Evening
Catch the Padres on Power Hour at Harbor Town, hit the arcade in the back, or stay for happy hour near Shelter Island (Mon–Fri 3–6). On Friday and Saturday late, Point Loma stays casual — see the nightlife guide.
Weekend morning
Walk Shelter Island first thing, then breakfast at Harbor Town — Sat & Sun 8am–1pm. Full menu on the weekend breakfast page.
A locals' half-day loop around Shelter Island
If you've got four or five hours, this is the loop locals run with out-of-town guests:
- Park at Shoreline Park on Shelter Island Drive — free lot, bay views, restrooms.
- Walk the waterfront north to the Tunaman's Memorial and the Yokohama Friendship Bell.
- Cut over to Fisherman's Landing — watch the boats unload, browse the fish market.
- Drive five minutes to Harbor Town Pub for lunch on the dog-friendly patio.
- Loop back via Sunset Cliffs for the golden-hour view before dinner.
That sequence covers the best of Point Loma without ever feeling rushed.
Date-night version
Sunset on the Shelter Island side first — Bali Hai if you want a mai tai with a view. Then drive five minutes back to Harbor Town for dinner and a couple of happy-hour pours (the kitchen runs late). Finish with a pinball round in the back — see pinball in Point Loma. It's the local move that doesn't require a reservation, doesn't burn a Friday-night budget, and doesn't end at 9pm.
Group / bachelorette weekend
Most bachelorette weekends stay at the Shelter Island hotels and need somewhere casual to land between brunches and beach time. Harbor Town's back room handles groups of 10 to 100+ for an afternoon block — book ahead on the private parties page and we'll save space, set up a tab, and have the arcade ready. For the full Friday-Saturday-Sunday flow, see the Point Loma nightlife guide.
Parking, transit, and getting around
Shelter Island has free public parking lots along Shelter Island Drive — the easiest are at Shoreline Park and near the boat launch.
